Mother's Day
The United States celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. Social activist Julia Ward Howe started a Mother's Day for Peace, after a British holiday, yet failed to get formal recognition in 1870. An Appalachian homemaker, Ann Jarvis, started a movement in 1858 called Mother's Work Days and organized women throughout the Civil War. Eventually in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first Mother's Day to honor those mothers whose sons had died in war. Just so you know, it is the MOST popular day of the year to dine out in a restaurant! Add some chocolate to that!
